A career criminal was today jailed for three years after he admitted stealing cans of gasoline, toilet paper and a chainsaw from a Tucker’s Town home.
Chet Wilmont, 51 was seen on security video footage at 17 Tucker’s Town Road stealing various items from the home’s shed between September 16 and September 25.
The court heard items at the home kept going missing, so the owner decided to install security cameras around the property.
After she installed the cameras, a worker told her he had seen a suspicious man in the area.
On September 16, the homeowner reviewed the security footage and saw a man exiting her property empty handed. He then came back and exited the shed carrying two gasoline canisters.
On September 20, the defendant was seen rummaging through the shed and left with another can of gasoline, a large package of toilet paper and a chainsaw.
The total value of the items stolen was $1,385.
Wilmont was arrested on October 4. The court heard he has numerous similar convictions dating back to 1979.
Addressing the court, Wilmont said: “I would like to apologise to the victim and the courts and my family. I throw myself at the mercy of the court.”
Magistrate Khamisi Tokunbo sentenced Wilmont to three years in prison for the theft counts and 12 months for prowling about the property.
Wilmont pleaded guilty to two counts of entering the home as a trespasser and stealing the items and one count of prowling.
