If sports are supposed to be more about fun than winning, then this Friday’s Mad Hatters Rugby Tournament will have it in spades.
The rugby season kicks off at National Sports Centre
This event replaces the Sandy’s Boat Tournament which normally takes place at Malabar Field.
A spokesperson for the Bermuda Rugby Football Union said participants are “asked to attend in the popular restaurant’s trademark crazy hats as part of the festivities. It should prove to be a fantastic atmosphere.”
Police are the defending men’s winners but should face a stiff challenge from Renegades.
Renegades will be counting on BRFU Player of the Year prop Jahan Cedano to lead the way.
Last season was a year of development for a young Teachers’ squad. They will be looking to impress with their young and upcoming team.
Josh Deallie was Rookie of the Year and should be one of the club’s mainstays this season.
Mariners will be searching for the form that led them to win their historic ‘double’ in 2011 and will rely on the return from a long injury of national team lock David Rorke.
On the Women’s side of the Mad Hatters tournament perennial combatants Renegades and Teachers will look to renew old rivalries with Woman Player of the year Katy Smith leading the Reds. However upstarts Police and Mariners will be showcasing their new talent and it should be a tight competition. Games are shorten to two 15 minute halves with each team playing each other once.
Kickoff is at 6pm. Food and refreshments will be sold. The inaugural trophy presentation scheduled for 10pm. n
