A mother-of-two today admitted importing 184 grams of cannabis into Bermuda in her hair.
Danielle Thomas, 33, arrived at the LF Wade International Airport at 2:30pm on January 7 on a flight from New York.
The court heard she cleared immigration and was then selected for a secondary inspection when she got to the Customs area.
Thomas was questioned and her luggage was searched. Officers found a plant-like material in her handbag and requested to do a personal search.
Crown counsel Susan Mulligan told the court during the search, officers asked Thomas to take down her hair, which was in a large bun with a cylindrical object.
When her hair came down, officers immediately smelled cannabis and found a compressed bag of plantlike material inside the object in her hair.
Officers also found another package from inside Thomas.
The defendant said: ‘I’m sorry and disappointed. I’m tired of suffering. I’m only trying to do for my children.”
The amount of cannabis could net anywhere from $3,000 to $9,000 in Bermuda, depending on how it is sold.
Thomas had been charged earlier this year and denied the matter. Today, she pleaded guilty.
Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner adjourned the matter to January 8 for sentencing and ordered presentencing reports.
Thomas was released on her existing court bail.
