Digicel Bermuda has hit a return winner in its continuing sponsorship of squash player Micah Franklin.
Franklin has been sponsored by Digicel since 2011, while he was still a teenager embarking on a professional career.
Franklin has been able to grow as an athlete by competing in international tournaments in Canada, US, Australia, and Brazil as part of the Professional Squash Association Tour thanks to this sponsorship..
This coming year’s sponsorship deal will allow Franklin to do training camps in the UK as well as competitions in the US, Argentina, Paraguay, Brazil, the Digicel 2014 Bermuda National Championships and representing Bermuda at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.
“I would like to say a massive thank you to Digicel and everyone involved in my professional squash career,” said Micah Franklin. “I am truly blessed and thankful for such continued support in following my aspirations of being Bermuda’s best squash player in history. My hope is that someday squash will get the recognition it deserves as the healthiest sport in the world and be included in the Olympic Games. I will continue to train and improve and give it 100 percent of my time to be the best player I can be.”
Bermuda Squash Raquets Aassociation director of squash, Patrick Foster, said in a press release: “Micah is a fantastic role model for all the young kids on our squash programme. Having come all the way through the programme himself and now having reached a career high world ranking of #151, we at the BSRA couldn’t be more proud of him. Digicel’s generous support will allow him to continue to train, travel and fly the flag for Bermuda on the World Squash stage.”
“The growth we have seen in this young athlete has been remarkable,” stated Digicel Bermuda sales director, Shane McDonnell. “Last year, his goal was to be one of the top 200 squash players in the world; he is now ranked 170th. We at Digicel are very proud of Micah and his progress and we are pleased to continue providing support.”
