Watch it: Rihanna an icon at the age of 25

The American Music Awards aired on Sunday and it was my girl Rihanna’s night.

Her mother Monica Braithwaite presented the 25-year-old with the AMA icon award. She said she couldn’t believe that at the age of 25 she is considered an icon.

Rihanna — the biggest selling digital artist of all time — also performed her hit Diamonds with an orchestra for backing.

But what got me and everyone else talking was the hairstyle. Girlfriend had her hair wrapped like she was going to bed. All she needed was her scarf.

Here are few more noteworthy moments of the night:

• Katy Perry sparked controversy by opening the night with a Japanese-inspired performance of her new song Unconditionally. There were cries of racism on Twitter as Katy was dressed up like a geisha; there were geisha dancers, floating lanterns and cherry blossoms.

I didn’t get what geishas had to do with the song but it wasn’t racist to me at all. It seems to me that people no longer understand the word ‘racist’. Katy’s vocals were great and it was a solid performance.

• Miley Cyrus performed and kept it PG, thank God. This time, she wore a two-piece high cut bikini bottom ensemble with cats on it. Bizarrely, she sang in front of a green screen with a giant cat lip synching in the background.

Here are the bad points — you knew there would be some — most of the vocals of Wrecking Ball were terrible with a bit of Country twang. Mind you, the chorus sounded good but her voice was shaky and pitchy on the verses. Very annoying.

Lady Gaga must have heard that people are over her so she decided to go for shock value. She sang her song Do What You Want with R&B great R Kelly. The pair did a little Marilyn Monroe/Monica Lewinsky action with Kelly’s presidential bit.

Gaga’s vocals were on point as usual and of course R Kelly sang the song well. The thing I loved about this is Gaga was sexy but also super passionate. This is probably the best I’ve ever heard her sing. And I saw her live back in 2009 so that says a lot.
