I don’t like winter months - or American retail scams

Welcome to another edition of ‘6.0 Minutes’ — my weekly round-up of random thoughts.

Funeral services

Lately I have been to about 5 funerals. Seems quite a few things to run as common threads;

• You meet folks you have known all along but just never knew they were your cousins. Often there is some story of romantic close calls of persons who were dating until they found out they were related;

• Funerals at Catholic and Anglican churches are timed for about one hour exactly. At other churches they round out to be about two hours. Seems pretty rough to narrow someone’s life down to one hour;

• The Augustus family seem to have funeral services down to an exact science. From beginning ‘til end they comfort the families and assist them all along the way. I have yet to be let down by them.

So long to summer

Well the ‘Hawk is back out.’ The air is chilly and the days are less sunny.

The thing is, as an islander, I do not like winter months. I mean, putting on layers of clothes just to stay warm? Catching colds and flu? Shivering nights and sleeping with three comforters? No fun.

With all these cold winter months it’s no surprise the birth rate is always highest around the months of July and August. Plenty of Cup Match babies on the way!

Give me sweat and humidity any day over all this winter stuff. Maybe I need to move down south until May.

Black Friday

Well, in two days’ time, millions of Americans and a few hundred Bermudians will stand out in the cold on a dark winter night in to beat the rush of other people.

After experiencing it in the US I really have come to see Black Friday as a big scam by the retailers of America. If they can put it on sale for one day, then what happened to the other 364 days?

 I mean, really — hanging with a group of friends and fighting with strangers just to attempt to save a few dollars. Have we not heard of Black Monday? You can get same prices with no crowds by waiting three days.

Anyway, until next week. If for some reason I do not make it, you can check me around at Augustus. I may be cold but I will not be wearing black.
