Bradford City joint chairman Mark Lawn admitted Nahki Wells may choose to leave the club in the January transfer window.

The Bantams turned down a bid from Peterborough in the summer, while Leeds United, QPR, Huddersfield and Burnley were among the clubs said to be keeping a close eye on the 23-year-old Bermuda striker.

That level of interest is set to intensify in the coming weeks given the £2-million rated Wells’ red-hot form in League One this season.

The former Dandy Town and CedarBridge Academy student has 13 goals in all competitions before tonight’s game against Notts County, although Wells is a doubt for the match after spending most of Monday in bed with a stomach bug.

Lawn told the Yorkshire Post he won’t let his prize asset go on the cheap — the striker has refused to discuss a new contract with the club — but conceded the ball is increasingly in the striker’s court.

He said: “Obviously, the next transfer window opens in a month or so and that is bound to lead to more speculation.

“We have asked Nahki if he wants to talk about a new contract, but he just wants to concentrate on his football.

“We would love to sign him for longer, of course we would. But we have to respect his wishes.

“What it means, though, is there could be a big decision for the club to make in January. And also a big decision for Nahki to make.

“We want to keep Nahki. He has been a big part of what this club has achieved over the past 18 months. But what I will say is that if Nahki does leave, he won’t do so on the cheap.”
