John Kane is confident Rugby Classic fans will again enjoy the “party atmosphere” when the action begins tomorrow night.

The World Rugby Classic president and his team have been furiously working behind the scenes to lay on another feat of rugby and –– let’s be honest ––
good times.

Some of the world’s leading names will line up at the National Sports Centre during the week and remind spectators of the talent that led many of them to enjoy top international careers.

Victor Matfield and Percy Montgomery will lead a strong South Africa side, while Yannick Jauzion (France), Colin Charvis (Wales), Shaun Long (Great Britain rugby league), Dafyyd James (Wales) and Federico Todeschini (Argentina) are others to look out for.

For Kane, though, he expects this year’s competition to be closely contested.

“Victor Matfield has just retired and Percy Montgomery is coming back — there’s also Jauzion for France and Todeschini for Argentina.

“Italy are going to be stronger this year. In fact, all the teams are a bit stronger so I’m expecting some close games.”

The Classic Lions will appeal to many expats, while the South Africans and Aussie supporters will be able to see some familiar faces.

“And we get good support from the Italian community,” added Kane. “There’s something for everyone.”

The band, the Kennel Boys, will be rocking out both Saturday nights, while DJ Choice will be in charge of the tunes in the Tent Tavern throughout the week.

The week is also a showcase for youth rugby and the Beyond Rugby progamme, with coaching sessions taking place on the Wednesday. Lloyds RFC team take on Bermuda on Thursday before the second Plate and Classic semi-final — don’t miss a chance to cheer on the local players.

He said: “It’s obviously hectic. The island is going to be very busy next week but we are pleased the hotels are getting a lot of business.

“There is nothing you can plan for in the last week. The phones are ringing, the emails are coming in — the last 10 days, it’s a mad house.”
