The Cornerstone Foundation is holding its inaugural Annual Golf Challenge, supporting at-risk youth at Belmont Hills golf course.

Places for teams of four are available for the charity event that will take place on Saturday, November 23.

Act fast, though, because 10 of the 23 team slots have already been snapped up and it’s first come, first served.

The cost of entering is $600 per team but you can also enter as an individual at a cost of $150.

There is a longest drive competition, two nearest-the-pins, teams can buy up to four mulligans, while there will also be a skins pot for the winner of a designated hole.

The Foundation has narrowed its focus in recent times in a bid to address the problems on the island with at risk youth and run a prison back-to-work programme, a co-ed GED programme and a Christmas stores initiative where about 100-150 families are selected to be able to buy brand new products for Christmas at a heavily-discounted rate.

Foundation board member Dave Shastri told the Bermuda Sun: “The reality is that over the last few years we have narrowed the work of the foundation.

“It used to do a lot of external activities out of Bermuda.

“We still have some committees, we still have things that are residual but the focus is very much on dealing with at-risk youth in Bermuda.

“We have a need for  people to know a bit about what the Foundation does because the only away the Foundation has ever raised money up to this point has been specifically for a project.

“A good example is Haiti — we went to people that we’ve been talking to over the years and garnered interest and  support to provide relief into Haiti, and we did.

“But when you’re dealing with a more consistent challenge like the problems we see within the Bermuda environment with the youth who aren’t able to become productive members of society without some help then that really requires a broader  effort and a more consistent effort to put in place programmes.

“So establishing a golf tournament will bring in important funding and broadens the awareness of the programme among people.”
