The manager of Grotto Bay appeared in court this morning accused of hiring workers illegally.

Johannes Martens,  55, pleaded not guilty in Magistrates Court to employing five US citizens on April 4 without the specific written permission of the Minister of Home Affairs.

The matter was adjourned to June 28.

Mr Martens was released on $10, 000 bail.

A Ministry of Home Affairs spokesperson on Wednesday afternoon said, “The Ministry of Home Affairs takes the matter of work permit violations very seriously, and while we are not in a position to comment specifically on the Grotto Bay issue, as it is a matter still before the Courts, steps have already been taken to strengthen the work permit compliance regime.

“Further, the community can expect to see legislative amendments in the coming months that further support the Ministry's commitment.”
