PHC players' fleet feet will raise funds
Members of the PHC Football team will run the relay and half marathon on Friday to raise funds for the PHC Foundation.
There will be two teams of relay runners and six players will run the whole half derby.
Jonathan Ball, a member of PHC said: “The PHC Foundation plans on participating in the May 24th Half-Marathon because we saw it as a positive initiative that we could use to raise funds for our scholarship program.
“The youngest person involved in the half-marathon is 17 while the oldest is 50+ so we also saw this as an opportunity for young people at PHC to learn from some of the older PHC members.
Complete Athlete
“The PHC Foundation believes in developing the ‘complete athlete’ so promoting fitness and higher education in one event was an easy decision.”
Mr Ball said the two teams are Team White and Team Black.
“The PHC Foundation Team White consists of Kenji Griffith, Thomas Brown, Tre Ming, and Mikal Simmons.
“The PHC Foundation Team Black is composed of Blenn Bean, Marco Warren, Marquel Waldron, and Robert Richardson.
“I still can’t predict which team will win as there are some very fit individuals on both sides.”
The players running the half marathon are Kamel Hewey, Mark Simons, Derek Douglas, Jevon Mallory, Jevon Sealy, and Mr Ball.
He said the fundraising goal is anywhere between $5,000 and $10,000.
“All of the money raised will go directly towards our scholarship fund.
Scholarships
“Over the last five years, The PHC Foundation has awarded over $150,000 in scholarships to young people at PHC.
“Going forward, we hope to up the level of scholarships awarded through initiatives such as this and the generous support of corporate Bermuda.”
Mr Ball said the runners would be wearing special shirts for the races.
Asked why the public should support this fundraiser, he said: “The PHC Foundation is looking to create a better balance between athletics and academics.
“In Bermuda, we tend to put too much emphasis on winning on the football pitch.
“What is more important is winning in the classroom and in life.
“The PHC Foundation is well poised to support the needs of young people because of its deep connection to Bermuda’s grass roots.
“Our goal is to truly be a club in the heart of the community, with the community in its heart.”
