Wells and Bradford City endured a chastening 5-0 defeat to Premier League Swansea in the Capital One Cup final in February, although the striker took some solace in becoming only the third Bermudian to play at the iconic stadium.
The former Dandy Town man is now back in red-hot form, firing three crucial goals in the 5-4 aggregate play-off semi-final win over Burton Albion to take his season’s tally to 25 in all competitions.
Brimming with confidence after seven goals in eight games, he says the moment has now come to put the pain of the League Cup final to bed and secure promotion to League One.
He told the Bermuda Sun: “As lower league players, you don’t get the chance to play at Wembley that often so we need all our experience [that we gained].
“It’s our chance to put it right. It’s the perfect time.
“We did fantastic to get there [the Capital One Cup final]. To play a high-form team from the Premier League was a tough ask but now we have the experience of playing there, which our opposition don’t, so we have to take that into Saturday.”
There’s no wonder Wells is confident about facing the Cobblers, having scored six — including his maiden hat-trick — in five games against them.
He said: “During my time at the club I personally can’t remember losing to them, although we drew with them in the FA Cup — the players and the manager have that in our minds.
“I’ve scored a few goals against them as well. I think it’s the most I’ve scored against any one team, so I think we’ll do well.”
The former CedarBridge Academy pupil could become the first Bermudian to score at the ‘home of football’ on Saturday. But he admits there is less attention surrounding his second trip to Wembley. That, he says, it not necessarily a bad thing.
He said: “There’s not the same hype but I think that may benefit us. We don’t get the same amount of media with this cup. It’s similar to any other game for us.
“We all enjoy doing the TV and seeing yourself in the newspapers, there’s a lot more buzz around the place, but this is just another game. The build-up is the same, the training is the same, the attitude is the same, the same 90 minutes — so let’s do the business.”
Saturday’s final kicks off 9:30am Bermuda time.
