Old Sonesta Beach site receives some TLC

An extensive clear-up operation is under way at the old Sonesta Beach site in Southampton.

The old hotel site was recently bought by the Green family, who plan to rename their purchase the Southampton Beach Resort.

Just this week diggers and lorries were busy working on the site clearing debris and overgrown vegetation.

But a spokesperson for the Green family told the Bermuda Sun there were still no immediate plans for the area.

The spokesperson added: “The works at the South Beach site (formerly Sonesta) is simple maintenance.

“It is not a precursor to any construction.

“The work has involved the clearing away of debris, invasive weeds and plants and the like.

“The work has been ongoing for two weeks, and some local staff and two local small contractors are carrying out the work.

“There are still, at this current time, no immediate plans for the site.”

The Greens already own the Fairmont Hamilton Princess and Waterloo House properties.

The hotelier family wants to do $50 million in upgrades to the Hamilton Princess before setting their sights on getting to work on the new Southampton Beach Resort.

The old Sonesta site had become an eyesore after the old hotel closed down following a major hurricane.

It was littered with builder’s rubble, old shipping containers and decaying remnants of the old hotel.

The site now looks in a much better state of repair and the beach around Slinky Bay appears clean and well kept.
