A 27-year-old man was today jailed for 30 days after he admitted drink driving and driving while disqualified for the third time.
Seion Darrell was seen driving along Par-la-Ville Road in a Kia Sportage on Sunday at 3:37am by officers who were parked in the 24-hour gas station.
He drove into the gas station and then exited the vehicle. Officers saw he was unsteady on his feet.
The court heard officers recognised him because they had spoken to him earlier outside of the Bermuda Bistro at the Beach and he appeared to be intoxicated there.
At the gas station, officers approached Darrell whose eyes were bloodshot and his breath smelled strongly of alcohol.
The officers told him he would be arrested for suspicion of impaired driving.
Darrell then said: “You’re not Bermudian. You can’t talk to me. I can I say what the f**k I want.”
At the Hamilton Police Station, Darrell took the breathalyser and it revealed he had 111 milligrams of alcohol in 100 milliliters of blood.
The court heard Darrell was convicted of impaired driving on August 19, 2011.
He was also convicted of driving while disqualified in August and September of last year.
Darrell pleaded guilty to a third charge of driving while disqualified on March 24.
Addressing the court, Darrell said: “The reason that I was driving this time was the people I was with weren’t able to drive.
But Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner said: “But you weren’t able to drive either.”
Darrell then said: “But it was safer for me to drive rather than let them drive.”
Mr Warner gave Darrell a $2,000 fine for impaired driving, a three-year driving ban, a $500 fine for disqualified driving and 30 days imprisonment.
The fines must be paid by April 26.
