A 23-year-old man today admitted stealing his girlfriend’s father’s ATM card and withdrawing funds.

Leroy Henderson pleaded guilty in Magistrates’ Court to stealing $500 from Winston Godwin.

The court heard Mr Godwin was at his Long Bay Lane, Sandy’s home when his wife went on the internet.

She was looking into their finances and saw some discrepancies in their joint account.

Mrs Godwin saw there had been withdrawals made from an ATM in Somerset and contacted the bank.

The bank launched an investigation and found that the withdrawals were done at 7pm on January 25, one for $300 and one for $200.

The matter was then reported to police and surveillance cameras showed it was Henderson who withdrew the money with Mr Godwin’s ATM card.

Henderson was arrested and admitted going into the Godwin’s home and stealing the card.

He told police his girlfriend, Karen, told him the PIN number.

Duty counsel Oonagh Vaucrosson spoke on Henderson’s behalf and said: “He’s in a relationship with Karen Godwin and they have a son together, 12 months old.

“He wasn’t working at the time. His son was in dire need of necessities.

“He committed it in order to get necessities for his son, diapers and food.”

But Mr Godwin was in court and refuted the defendant’s claims.

“We have been looking after his son for quite some time. My wife and I take care of everything for that child.

“We feed the child and take care of the child.

“What he was doing was coming into my house nights while we were eating, take the card and take my money.

“He did it on the Monday, tried on the Tuesday and successfully on the Wednesday.

“This guy doesn’t take care of the child. I take care of the child.”

Mr Godwin also said Henderson isn’t welcomed in his home and he has been told several times.

Senior Magistrate Archibald Warner adjourned the matter for sentencing on April 30.

He also order pre-sentencing reports and gave Henderson $2,000 bail.
