Bermuda cricket: Why 'normal' is not good enough

You can’t be “normal” and make it as international cricket, David Moore has warned.

Question marks were raised last year over the commitment of some national team players.

While recognising the challenges of being a part-time Associate nation, National Coach Moore says if you don’t put the work in, you’ll quickly be found out.

He said: “We all have to understand that in international cricket there’s a culture and you can’t just be a normal Bermudian person, you’ve got to actually commit to improve yourself and make a commitment to play.

“If you’re not willing to do that then unfortunately, you are going to be letting yourself down, your team down and your country down because you are not going to compete well enough with the teams that have committed themselves fully.”

Moore hailed the work done with Bermuda’s Academy programme and the partnerships with Mirrors, Youth Net, HSBC Foundation and XL Foundation in getting young people into the game.

He believes the future is bright.

He said: “Our national academy programme is going really well.

“It’s been recognized through the ICC as one of the best Academy programmes in the Associate world.

He added: “Good young people committed to school and sport – they are the ones that succeed at sport, There aren’t too many dumb bunnies that play professional sport.”
