Forbes released its Billionaires List this week and while none of those featured officially call Bermuda home, there are several who have Bermuda connections.
A total of 1,426 people made the list this year, around 16 per cent more than last year.
Mexico’s Carlos Slim topped the list with a net worth of $73B. The telecom mogul easily outdistanced Microsoft founder Bill Gates, who was worth $67B.
The rest of the top five included Spain’s Amancio Ortega ($57 B), Warren Buffett ($53.5 B) and Oracle founder Larry Ellison ($43 B).
Those having a Bermuda connection were New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg ($11, $27 B), who has a house in Tucker’s Town, Ross Perot (#384, $3.5 B) and Former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi (#194, $6.2 B) who has family here.
Richest woman
The United States has more billionaires, 442, than any other nation.
Liliane Bettencourt is the world’s richest woman with a net worth of $30 B. The L’Oreal owner is also the richest person who lives in France.
TV mogul Oprah Winfrey (#503) is worth $2.8 billion, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg (#66) is worth $13.3B and at 28, is the youngest person on the list along with fellow Facebook owner Dustin Moskovitz (#353), although Moskovitz is ‘only’ worth $3.8 billion.
The only other person under 30 on the list is German Albert von Thurn und Taxis (#974), who is 29 and worth $1.5B.
David Rockfeller Sr (#527) is the oldest person on the list at 97. The Standard Oil owner and banker is worth $2.7B. Kirk Kerkorian (#412), 95, is the second oldest person on the Forbes List. He made most of his $3.3B fortune in casinos and investments.
Sports
The List is the one place where Arsenal tops Manchester United in the standings.
While Manchester United owner Malcolm Glazer (#286) is worth $4.4B, Arsenal’s Stanley Kroenke (#248) has a net worth of $5B. Both men also own other sports teams. Formula One owner Bernard Ecclestone is #353 ($3.8B), Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones is #527 (2.7B) and New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft is #641 ($2.3B).
