A tasty derby between the two Somerset clubs was arguably the highlight of yesterday’s FA Challenge Cup quarter-final draw at Bermuda Football Association HQ.
Somerset Cricket Club will take on Division One Somerset Bridge Recreational Club on Sunday, February 17 at Somerset Cricket Club in a cup tie that will see parish bragging rights up for grabs.
The other tie not dependent on this Sunday’s replays pairs PHC with Devonshire Rec in a match that will be held at Southampton Rangers, also on the Sunday.
The Friday night tie sees Wolves take on the winners of Dandy Town and Flanagan’s Onions, while the Saturday kick-off drew Robin Hood with St George’s with Southampton Rangers or St George’s at Goose Gosling Field. The Friday and Saturday games will be evening kick-offs.
The president of defending champions Dandy Town, Wayne Campbell, was at pains not to look ahead to the potential last-eight clash with Wolves knowing a tough replay with Flanagan’s Onions awaits them this weekend.
He said: “It’s an interesting draw for us and nothing is a safe bet, especially with the way the season has gone so far.
“We just have to get there first – we have a replay to win and then we can go from there.
“It’s not going to be easy but the team just has to put their best foot forward.
“The FA Cup is prestigious, obviously over the season the biggest thing is the league. But if we want to have a good cup run we have to show consistency.”
For the Hornets coach Jomar Wilkinson he’s hoping the improved display in the 1-1 draw against title rivals Cougars last weekend can be a launch pad for the remainder of the season and help them retain their FA Challenge Cup title.
Wilkinson said: “I came away from the game thinking it was two points dropped. I thought we were the better team on the day and we deserved three points.
He added: “I actually think the way we played at the weekend was something we can now use as a stepping stone because we played well and missed a lot of chances.”
In the Masters Cup semi-final draw, Somerset Extros will take on North Village at 1pm on March 16, while St George’s Stallions will face-off with Southampton Rangers Masters on the same day at 3pm.
Both games will be played at Bernard Park.
