Tyler Smith defeated Alexandria Agee in the second round of the International Tennis Federation Junior Circuit Tournament at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium on Tuesday to advance to the quarter-finals.
Smith was dominant in the first set, taking it 6-0. Agee had no answer for Smith’s powerful serves, struggling to return them at times. Smith stayed on point throughout the set, resulting in the lopsided score.
She started the second set well but had difficulty finishing the game off. She went through a spell of poor serves, something Agee was able to capitalize on as she tried to fight her way back.
However, Smith was always in control as the set ended 6-2, with the last few games very tightly contested as Agee fought hard to avoid an early exit.
Smith, the third seed in the tournament, told the Bermuda Sun after the game: “I thought I did pretty good. Towards the end I couldn’t close it out for some reason, but I fought through it.”
Despite the convincing victory, Smith added: “I don’t expect anything. I’m just going out and playing how I want to play and doing what I want to do on the court.”
Smith will face off against seventh-seeded American Madison Harrison today not before 2pm at the WER Joell Tennis Stadium.
