There will be no powerboat racing at Ferry Reach this Sunday. That’s because drivers and spectators will be treated to different course when the Spanish Point Grand Prix takes place.
Ernie Mello, race director, said racing is expected to start at 1pm for the Spanish Point Grand Prix and a National Championships series race will go off under the starter’s flag around 3pm.
The drivers will be tested under more open water conditions rather than the cozy confines of Ferry Reach. He told the Bermuda Sun: “This will be one of the last qualifying races for Around The Island.” Mello said 10 boats have qualified for powerboats’ biggest race and he is expecting a few more will meet the standard on Sunday: “This race normally would have been at Dockyard, but this race’s start and finish will be at the Spanish Point Boat Club.”
He said the Grand Prix will take the boats out to Grace Island to marker 42 and back to the club.
Mello added that, depending on weather, the Grand Prix will either be timed — either 45 minutes or one hour — while the Championships is a lap race.
