The Bermuda Department of Tourism hired local commercial printer Island Press to produce its latest Travel Tips brochure, keeping money on-island that might otherwise have been spent overseas.

Island Press is a sister company to the Bermuda Sun in the MediaHouse group of companies.

Of the 85,000 copies of the brochure produced at Island Press, 83 per cent of them were sent to the US, Canada and the UKwhere they are put directly into the hands of potential Bermuda visitors.

The Department of Tourism could have chosen to print in any of the countries where the brochures were being shipped, but instead chose a Bermuda company.

That decision means the government’s spending on this project has a positive multiplier effect on the local economy.

Glenn Jones, acting general manager of MediaHouse said: “When we can keep taxpayer-funded printing jobs on the island it means we can put people to work.

“They, in turn, spend the money they earn in our restaurants, retail stores and other places.  It’s homegrown economics at its finest. If other government departments follow the print locally example of Bermuda Tourism, the industry would eventually employ more people. And countrywide creating more jobs is everyone’s goal.”

The Bermuda Travel Tips brochure explains to visitors how to get to Bermuda by air and by sea.

It also lists important information about travel documents, taxes, public holidays and climate.

Chris Worsick, sales and marketing manager at Island Press, said: “Bermuda Tourism’s decision to select our tender for the Travel Tips brochure confirms for us that you don’t have to print overseas to produce high-end quality work and is yet further proof that our pricing remains extremely competitive when placed alongside our competitors in the North American print market. We’re especially proud to put our name to this project because Island Press is playing a small part in helping bring visitors to our island.”
