Bermuda booked their place in the football gold medal match with a 8-0 thumping of Falklands Islands at the National Sports Centre on Monday night.

In a one-side encounter, the hosts always had too much class for their opponents, who struggled in the muggy conditions.

Six separate goalscorers featured in the rout, with Antwan Russell, Damon Ming, Domico Coddington, Zeiko Lewis (2), Rai Simons (2) and Tyrell Burgess all on target.

In the night’s other men’s game, Greenland hammered Froya 12-0. They now play Falklands on Wednesday (6pm at the National Sports Centre) to see who will contest the gold medal, while Bermuda play their final group game against Froya at 8pm at the same venue.

The gold medal match will take place on Thursday night at the National Sports Centre, 8pm kick-off.

For skipper John Barry Nusum, the win over Falklands was a job well done.

He told the Bermuda Sun: “It’s the start of the game that’s always the difficult one. The first 10-15 minutes it was difficult for us to get a grasp on it but once we started knocking the ball around and playing simple, it worked out for us.

“I think the heat is doing a number on these teams as well. The simpler we made it, the easier we made it look.

“Playing a team like Falkland puts pressure on you — you’re supposed to win. But at the same time, every game of football you want to play the same style. If you play the right way then, most of the time, you’ll get a good result."

He added: “To be honest, Greenland was a good game, maybe the team we end up facing for gold. It’s going to take a lot of work — it won’t be a cakewalk.”
