All four boys have been putting in hundreds of miles of hard training since their selection in June, under the watchful eye of former national coach, Greg Hopkins. Hopkins was also able to call on the talents of Bermuda's pro-rider Tyler Butterfield, Kris Hedges (the current Caribbean time trial champion) and ex-Tour de France rider, Jonathan Vaughters to assist.
For three of the group, Saltus Grammar School students Godfrey and Fox, and Warwick Academy student Woolridge, this will be their second appearance at the CCC, having represented Bermuda in 2006 in Hatillo, Puerto Rico. Cedarbridge Academy student, Place, will be relishing the prospect of his first overseas competition. He has been steadily improving since taking up the sport only last season, inspired by his teacher, Everton Dawes.
The CCC comprises an individual 15km time trial on Saturday (August 18) with a road race on Sunday (August 19). The 17-18 age group will race 90km, while Woolridge's race will be 70km.
The road race course is expected to be flat and fast. According to Barbados Cycle Union president, Keith Yearwood, Barbados and Bermuda will be competing along with at least twelve other confirmed island nations, including Jamaica, Trinidad and Tobago, Aruba, British Virgin Islands, St Lucia, Guyana, Martinique, Guadeloupe, Curacao, St Vincent and the Grenadines, Antigua and Puerto Rico.
The team will be accompanied to Barbados by team manager Kris Hedges, and by mechanic and coach, Ricky Sousa Snr.
Nigel Godfrey is the vice-president of the Bermuda Bicycle Association.[[In-content Ad]]
