Worrying signs of how Bermuda is evolving
Some may look at the Bermuda of today and say that we have evolved into our own. Indeed, many brag about our economic status. I mean, how many 21 square mile places can boast of an economy such as ours? How many countries feign independence even as we are yet a dependent territory? Not many, if any.
Yes, Bermuda has evolved. There's nothing wrong with evolution. It is a progressive change over a long period of time, resulting in an entity being different from what it was before. One would hope that evolution would bring about change for the better. That is, we would hope that more education, bigger homes, and more money would evolve a people into a place called a "better state".
However, when those people are fuelled and propelled by their own selfishness and their own desire to be empowered, their evolution can result in more harm than good. That is, what should be good is not good at all, and what should make us proud has caused us to feel ashamed and sad.
We are living in perilous times. Gangs run amok. Murders go unsolved. Killings occur far too often. Right appears wrong and wrong appears right. Something is terribly wrong in the Isle of Paradise.
I question whether the voices of the prophets are being heard. That is, there are many who are speaking, but how many are listening? It is a shame that evil easily speaks and is heard loudly and clearly. It is a shame that ignorance can easily speak and be given a platform from which to broadcast its voice. It is a shame when wrong and illegal are given a louder voice than right and that which is law-abiding.
I guess we have evolved to where bad news, silly news, and unconstructive news have become the news of the day. How many times does a good, healthy, and helpful story make it to the front of a newspaper? No, we have evolved to where it is newsworthy when it will add nothing but gossip and shame to our already ailing island.
I invite Bermuda to continue to evolve or better yet, re-evolve. We must experience a change in our purpose and vision as a people. That which we look for and need in order to experience healing is where we left it - in the past. We must return to the Lord God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and spirit. It is when we obey God that He will restore all that has been lost to us.
Bermuda, though these are perilous times, God's Son, Jesus Christ, is still speaking and if we would heed His voice, then one more time, we will experience the good that God has in store for us. Respice finem.[[In-content Ad]]
