Women's cricket league kicks off
Five teams will take part in the first-ever Women’s Super Six Tournament.
The tournament is slated to take place on Saturday at the National Sports Centre, North Field, 9:30am start.
The aim of the tournament is to provide a fun day of fast cricket to start Bermuda's first ever Women's Super 6 League.
Five teams have registered to play, Key Stars, Bat, Bowl & Field (BBF’s), Girls Development Team (GDS), Hockey Ladies and Justus. Games will be played between teams of six players, and each game consists of a maximum of five six-ball overs bowled by each side (eight-ball overs in the final match).
In the run up to the tournament, National Coach, David Moore has been holding training sessions open to individuals and teams taking part.
Coach Moore said: “I am extremely pleased with the response so far. We have had five teams register and many more individuals who are interested in competing in the league scheduled to take place once the tournament has finished. We have a long way to go with women’s cricket, however, I am confident that the BCB is laying the foundations to progress in the right direction.”
Allen Richardson, BCB first vice president, said: “The Women's Development Programme came into fruition five years ago and since then we have seen an increase in women players from five years of age to adult. Although, there are lots of women and young girls competing against the boys, the BCB recognize the need to provide an all-women’s tournament and league to enable girls and women to play against each other on a regular basis.
“The BCB’s aim is to encourage more women players to enjoy the sport, which will aid in the overall development of women's cricket on the island.”
