Women's 5k expecting record numbers

Organizers of the upcoming PartnerRe Women's 5K Run & Walk are hoping for a record turnout to raise funds to fight female diabetes in Bermuda.

All proceeds from the October 15 event at the Botanical Gardens will go to the Bermuda Diabetes Association's (BDA) campaign to educate the community about the "silent killer."

In Bermuda, one in five women are at risk of developing diabetes; in women over 65, that figure jumps to one in three. Last year, one-quarter of Bermuda's pregnant women developed gestational diabetes.

This year's event kicks off, rain or shine, at 8:45am, with a junior girls' 3K race, followed by a 5K run and walk for adult women at 9:15 am.

A corporate trophy goes to the company with the most employees finishing, while the school with the most participants wins a $500 cash gift, dedicated to sports programmes and equipment.

Entry forms are available at Sportseller, Winners Edge and Sports R Us, or can be downloaded at www.partnerre5k.bm. Deadline for entries was Wednesday, October 11, at 4:30pm. Registration will take place the day before the race, Saturday, October 14, at the Jack King (Poultry) Building in Botanical Gardens, where entrants can collect their numbers. Gift bags and T-shirts will go to the first 1,000 registrants.

For more information, contact MAAC Race Directors Rosemary Jones, at 337-4696, [email protected], or Lynn Patchett, at 537-6676, [email protected].

Crime Stoppers 5k

The Argus Group, in association with Swan's Running Club, will once again sponsor the annual Crime Stoppers 5K Walk and Road Race on Sunday, October 22. The race, which is sanctioned by the Bermuda Track and Field Association, begins and ends at the Argus Building on Wesley Street. Walkers and junior runners start at 8:30 am and adult runners begin at 9 am.

New this year is a special incentive for teens to participate. All middle and senior students who compete will be eligible to win one of four Nano iPods. Additionally, the middle and senior school with the most students participating will each win a $1,000 gift voucher for sports equipment. As in previous years, there will be other exciting prizes and giveaways.

The deadline for entry is October 20th, although late registration will be permitted on the morning of the event. Entry forms are available from the Argus Group, International Sports Shop, Sportseller and Sports 'R' Us.[[In-content Ad]]
