Motor racing sensation Toriano Wilson crashed three times in his final practice session but can't wait to get back on the bike for the opening race of the Red Bull Rookies Cup.

The 13-year-old phenomenon has clocked the fastest times in practice on three consecutive sessions.

But this weekend it's for real.

Racing at the AMA Superbike event at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham, Alabama, this weekend, Wilson and the 23 other youngsters selected for the prestigious professional race series, will get their first taste of the big time.

"I've been setting the fastest times in practice but sometimes when it comes to the race I get a bit over excited.

"I'm just going to sit back a bit and not try to get in front from jump. I'll hang back and work my way up slowly and try and get in front at the end.

"I'm going to try and play it smart this time. I can't wait."

Wilson had been leading the pack in the simulated race on Tuesday when he crashed out on a corner.

"I was eight bike lengths ahead, but I let the bike down too low on the corner and crashed. I still managed to finish 12th."

Wilson said he had been enjoying the experience of racing with Red Bull.

"It's actually real fun. It's something new for me and it's a big difference from Bermuda," said the St David's youngster.

His dad Dennis 'chicken' Wilson, a former local champion, said: "We are feeling pretty confident about finishing somewhere up there in contention.

"Everybody's been surprised at how well he's done. We are getting a lot of people calling from back home and wishing him luck."

Despite some support from Sub Zero Air Conditioning and Wilson's job - BTC - the youngster is still struggling for sponsors.

"The kids he's up against are racing in other championships out here every weekend," he added.[[In-content Ad]]
