What's the upshot on historic hall?

What's the upshot on historic hall?

A quick reminder: Alexandrina Hall on Court Street was built in 1852 by black ex-slaves who had formed themselves into a cooperative group, purchased the land and then designed and built the magnificent building that stands today.

Bermuda Sun, May 2008, LaVerne Furbert vigorously responding to my comments of April 25, 2008...."As a member of the Historic Buildings Advisory Committee (HBAC), once I heard of the impending demolition of Alexandrina Hall, I asked that the matter be put on the agenda at our next meeting.  It was the consensus of all of the members of HBAC, who by the way are all black, that everything should be done to prevent Alexandrina Hall from being demolished.  I can assure Mr. Burchall and the rest of Bermuda that HBAC will do all in its power to prevent this sacrilege..."

Nine months later, what has happened? Has HBAC done "...all in its power to prevent this sacrilege."?  Or, has there been a quiet agreement behind the scenes?

Will Bermudians wake up one day and see the wrecker's ball suddenly materialize, replete with multiple Government issued permissions in triplicate, while supposedly powerful black people stand around wringing their hands, gnashing their teeth, wailing crocodile tears - all the while quietly stuffing millions of dollars into their back pockets?

Will all Bermudians suddenly discover - to their surprise - that there is no power where power is supposed to sit? That it is all just an expensive charade?

Will Bermudians learn - as Minister David Burch often points out - that greed rules? Will we discover that all the talk about 'black heritage', 'black history', and 'black pride' is just empty talk?

Simply, nine months after that promise, is Alexandrina Hall, this magnificent national monument, now safe from the wrecker's ball?[[In-content Ad]]
