Straight off the bat / A player's perspective

We're in danger of being relegated to Division 3

There was a lack of concentration. When a team gets in trouble, guys have got to put their heads down and get it done. They need to have a self-belief because they lack it. They were losing their wickets quite fast on the first day. No one wants to buckle down and do what they have to do.

After watching UAE bat, it looks like they took something from it and believed a little more on themselves.

UAE still dominated us and beat us inside of three days.

We failed to penetrate their batsmen.

We are in desperate times. Things are getting worse in terms of performance. We now face something we never thought could possibly happen in history — we could end up not qualifying to take part in the qualifiers for the World Cup. That’s something unheard of.

If Bermuda don’t come in the top four in next year’s Division 2 tournament, they’ll be relegated to Division 3. That’s a real possibility at this point based on the way we have been playing.

Things need to turn around. I don’t think we need to make major changes. Guys like Delyone Borden, Dion Stovell and Malachi Jones could help. We have to start preparing for it now. We need to be taking many tours and playing lots and lots of matches so people know what their roles are.

We’re not going to make the World Cup for the next two editions so we have to look seven or eight years down the road. We have to prepare for qualifiers so we can at least do that and stay in Division 2.

Cup Match

There are going to be several changes this year for a variety of reasons. Charlie Marshall has retired, Glenn Blakeney is injured and Landro Minors isn’t available so St. George’s will have at least three major changes.

St. George’s has been building well over the last five years and still has a top team. O.J. Pitcher will be coming back in as another solid batsman. Young Jason Anderson and Chris Foggo are in top form. We have a variety of fast bowling and spin options. We are not worried, but we are facing changes.

I am confident we have the bowling to bowl out Somerset twice. It won’t be easy, but we can do it.

I’m back out at training and hoping I will be selected again.

Cup Match is the pinnacle of local cricket. The league structure is a joke at best with the standard being very low and poor.

This is a match that gathers all our better players. It has to be our showcase and showing that cricket isn’t dying. We don’t have spectators going to league cricket, but they do go to Cup Match. The players have to ensure the standard is high.

Eastern Counties

The match is supposed to be at St. David’s but Bailey’s Bay wrote in asking it be at Sea Breeze Oval because in 2008, when it was supposed to be played there, they asked if it could be played at St. David’s because of the $100,000 renovation. They couldn’t host because their field was getting upgraded and there were safety concerns. The Eastern Counties voted to move it back to Bay.

St. David’s are up in arms over this. There is some question whether or not St. David’s will play or not next week. If the game is at Bailey’s Bay, St. David’s has taken a stance they will not play because we feel like it’s been taken from us. I support this.

When we were asked to host back in 2008, there was nothing said about giving up a future match in return.

It’s nothing against Bailey’s Bay, it’s just the matter in the way things have been done.
