'We need to play more 20-20, not less'

Logie believes 20-20 is here to stay and Bermuda’s players need to get used to it

Bermuda coach Gus Logie believes his side needs to play more 20-20 not less.

The short 'fast food' format of the game has been widely criticized for not being 'proper cricket' and teaching young players the wrong approach.

But after Bermuda's poor showing in the World 20-20 qualifier, where they finished sixth out of six after three-straight defeats, Logie believes his side need to play the game more.

And he believes it is mischievous to suggest that Bermuda could pick different players for different forms of the game when they struggle to scrape together enough players for one squad, let alone two.

"I think we need to play more - that's a format we are going to be playing a lot. We need more 20-20.

"Nobody ever said it was good for developing young cricketers - for that, you need time to bat you need openers who know how to build an innings.

"But that's the format that is going to be played more and more and individuals will have to adjust.

"It's a hustle game and people are going to have to be capable of playing it.."

Asked if Bermuda could pick separate squads for 20-20 and 50-over and four-day cricket, Logie said: "I think you've got to face facts in this country. How are you going to pick them when people don't want to play? Give me the names of the people that want to play?

"We can't pick different squads, we've got to teach players to play a different format of the game in three weeks - it can't work, I don't care who you are.

"You have all these players like ten Doeschate (Holland's Essex all-rounder who was the tournament's star player) coming back from county cricket for Holland and our guys think Cup Match is more important."

Logie said he was disappointed with the 20-20 tournament and the 'anti-climax' of the 1-0 ODI series loss to Holland which followed.

But he insisted: "I can't work miracles."

The coach added: "I think it's quite evident that it didn't go as well as we'd hoped.

We didn't bat particularly well throughout the tour.

"Conditions were poor, we've still got to get used to the 20-20 format. Even though we think we are big hitters we've seen that a different approach is needed. We still need to get the basics right.

"I think the bowlers - particularly George (O'Brien) and Stefan (Kelly) - can hold their heads up high."[[In-content Ad]]
