n Straight off the bat: A player's perspective

We have to do things right

It feels good to be part of the national team set up again. We left last night for Dubai to compete against the UAE. We’ll be playing in five matches in seven days starting on Tuesday.

Things are looking good and the guys who worked hard are going to get an opportunity to show what they can do.

This is a very young team with only David Hemp and myself as senior players who have travelled quite a bit in playing internationals.

This is a good chance for the young guys to prove they belong representing Bermuda come April when we play for our international fate.

Coach David Moore has been doing a lot of technical work with the guys. It’s now time to put it into show.

The mood is good among the team. The youngsters are up to the challenge. They are going into waters they don’t really know, but they are very positive.

I like the vibe they have going into these matches.

It’s going to be a wakeup call for a lot of them, but this is what it’s all about when you do battle in the international arena.

For me, it’s nice to be back, but it’s very different with all the youngsters.

I’m back because I love the game and am missing it.

It’s nice for me to be back on the international stage and showcase my talent and to help my country rise to where we all know Bermuda should be.

Winning becomes a habit and losing becomes a habit so obviously we want to win, but that’s not what this tour is about.

This tour is about us being able to compete and do what we’ve been taught by coach and do it right.

We’re building up to April so it’s important we execute we we’ve been taught.

This is a big, big transitional period for us as there are only three guys left from the World Cup. We’ve lost Clay Smith, Albert Steede, Dean Minors and the like.

There’s no more from that generation so we have to go with the young guys, but that takes time.

This tour will help them. We’ve got them on the fast track.

They will get to showcase their talent and do the right things then winning.

We have to be in control of the things we can be in control of — taking catches, bowling good lines, batting for good periods of time, shot selection. If the opposition is better than us on the day, then so be it. We just have to do the things we have to do correctly to build towards April.

We’re staying in the same hotel we’re going to be at in April. Playing these five games in seven days makes this like a mock run for April.

The coach is going to use this to see who can stand up to it and who can’t it.

We’re missing several players from this tour who will be vying for a spot come April so those who can’t stand the heat from this tour will have lost their opportunity while those who can will earn their place.

It’s about the individuals standing up in the team setting.

Hopefully, if we put it all together, on the day we can get a victory.
