Gun violence special report

Viewpoint: Has the gun violence altered your daily routine?

With the recent escalation of gun violence - including Sunday's apparently random shooting at the Western Stars Sports Club - it might appear to some that no one is safe. The Bermuda Sun's Helen Jardine and Leah Furbert took the streets to ask people if the violence has caused them to alter their behaviour/routines.

Keisha Burgess-Davis, bank executive

'I haven't changed my behaviour. However, my awareness level has certainly increased. I am more conscious of my surroundings. I may change my routine if it continues and nothing is done about it.'

Sharon Maybury, messenger

'My routine is still the same. I'm not going to let these people stop me from doing what I need to do. It will come to end one day - it has to.'

Kijana Butterfield, corporate administrator

'I haven't really changed much about what I do day-to-day. Although I have changed my mind about letting my kids, aged 11 and 12, go to the Ag Show on their own. I don't even want to go - I'm not bullet proof, either.'

Sasha Pedro, student

'I am definitely more aware day-by-day. Especially with the random shooting over the weekend. Before, the shootings were targeted and you felt it wasn't affecting you. Now I will be more wary when I'm out at night and about who I'm with.'

Steve Mohr, electrician

'No. I haven't changed what I do at all. I don't feel threatened. They're targeting specific people. It's no worse than living in a big city.'

Cleeve Trott, taxi driver

'It bothers me, but not enough to change my job. If they call me to pick them up - from any area in Bermuda - I'll go and get them. It's my livelihood. But picking them up off the street at night, that's a different story... I might think twice.'
