Under-19s qualify for World Cup

Bermuda is toasting the success of the Under-19 cricket team today, who earned a place in the Cricket World Cup in Malaysia. The team batted first in Toronto against co-favourites Canada and put up 194 runs in their allotted 50 overs. The hosts could only reply for 181-9 in their 50 overs.

Senior World Cup player Stefan Kelly led with a brilliant 52 not out from the tail end while fellow World Cup star Malachi Jones had a 33. K. Furbert added 39.

Bermuda started out okay, but ran into a bit of trouble as they went from 35 for zero to 39 for 3 with the wickets of Terryn Fray, Steven Bremar Jr and Chris Douglas falling. When Rodney Trott's wicket fell at 57 for 4, things started to look bleak, but Jones and Furbert put on a stand of 46 to help straighten Bermuda's sinking ship. Jordan DeSilva came in for the departed Jones and lasted two balls before he too was headed back to the pavilion after he was run out with Bermuda on 103-6.

It was then up to Furbert and Kelly to put Bermuda back on the path for a winning total. Furbert was caught with Bermuda on 182.

DeSilva and Kelly opened the bowling for Bermuda with Canada racing along without loss. It wasn't until Jones and T. Tucker was introduced that they began to restrict the Canadians.

The first wicket came at 55 with Bremar catching opener Guneskara on 31 to put Canada at 1-55. Tucker took the next wicket at 66 as the Bermuda boys began to build confidence. Jones snagged the next two Canadian scalps as he sent both Krishnamoorthy and James back to their chairs with ducks. Canada was at 75 for 4.

They never seriously challenged Bermuda's total after that. Canada needed 19 runs off its final over, but could only muster five runs.

Jones finished 3-37, Tucker 2 for 17 in 10 overs, Chris Douglas 2-34 in nine overs and Trott 1-30.

Bermuda finish the Tournament of the Americas undefeated.

Several of the Under-19 squad will be flying to Europe to bolster the senior national team, which lost again today 143 all out in reply to the Netherlands 315-8. Stephen Outerbridge had 24 runs and Lionel Cann 21. Dwayne Leverock was 3 for 55 while Ryan Steede was a tidy 1 for 38 in his 10 overs.
