Cody Sousa-Saints made his debut in the Superbike Class in racing at Southside last weekend. Sousa-Saints, 16, and Bruce Degrilla, 14, are scheduled to compete in the Red Bull Indianapolis Grand Prix on August 27 – 28 for Team Tuned.
The motorcycling racing team picked up three victories and three seconds in the eighth round of the Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club’s National Championship series.
GP70 Class
Shae Darrell, 12, had two of those wins. He stamped his seal of dominance by starting from the pole position in both heats and led from start to finish.
Team Tuned manager Cyril Whitter said: “Shae has shown extreme determination in his bid to win the GP70 Championship in 2010 after finishing a near second Place in 2009. With more than 100 points separating Shae from his nearest rival he looks sure to win his first GP70 Championship.”
GP 125 Class
Sousa-Saints and Degrilla continued their heated battle with Andrew DeCosta.
Whitter said: “In race one Bruce and Cody had their hands full battling head to head with 2008 Champion Andrew Decosta. As Bruce made a move for the lead Cody and Andrew continued a heated battle close behind allowing Bruce to open up a gap to his teammate and rival. After a few laps Cody managed a clean pass on Andrew, which sealed his position in second place for the remainder of the race.”
Degrilla finished first, followed by Sousa-Saints, then DeCosta.
Whitter added: “In race two Andrew, Bruce and Cody once again battled head to head from the first corner. Bruce and Cody put distance between themselves and Andrew as they battled for first position. An unfortunate mistake saw Cody lose the front as he attempted to overtake Bruce for the lead during the event. Unable to remount, Cody was sidelined for the remainder of the race. Bruce went on to win race two followed by Andrew in second place.”
Degrilla has passed DeCosta for first overall in the standings with Sousa-Saints a close third.
Superbike Class
With Whitter sitting out the weekend’s races due to management commitments, Sousa-Saints made his rookie appearance with the big boys. He had a more than respectable showing with a second and a third.
Whitter said: “Competing in two classifications during the same event is no easy feat and Cody's accomplishment of securing two podium finishes in his first Superbike Race was a milestone in his race career.”
