Tuff Dogs' errors lead to upset

The Commercial League playoffs began last week with a major upset in the A Division.

Fourth seed Marsh Madness came from behind to edge Docksiders Tuff Dogs 16 to 14.

It appeared that Tuff Dogs were going to cruise to a mercy win as they were up 14 to 2 after four innings. Ryan Gaglio (3-4) slammed a couple of homers in the first and second innings while Josh Strang (2-4) had a two-run shot.

Marsh scored two in the fifth and added six in the sixth to make this a contest as Mike Sterzuk (1-5) and Darren Green (4-5) homered.

The proverbial wheels came off the cart in the seventh inning as the Dogs made four errors to allow Marsh to take the lead. Docksiders went down 1-2-3 in the bottom half of the inning to give the upset to Marsh.

P&M sweeps series

Sound Stage was left without a note to play after P & M Electric beat them 14-6, 24 to 6 to advance to the A Division final.

Sound Stage took a 3-0 lead in the first inning of the first contest thanks to a Steve Simons (2-3) homer - and it would be the only time the club would be in front for the series. P & M plugged away with a few runs every inning starting with a Mark Herauf (4-4) homer in the second, and never let up. Terence Corday (2-4) capped a five-run sixth with a homer. Both John Ray, Carla Zuill and McLaren Lowe were 3-4 for P & M while pitcher Danny Cook was 3-3 in game one.

Leadoff man John Ray (2-2) set the tone for P & M in the second game by getting on base all five times. He scored in three of the first four innings as his club ran away with the win. MacLaren Lowe, playing in his first game since his father Rev. Wilbur Lowe passed away, paid a fitting tribute to his dad by blasting two homers and knocking in six runs.

Both teams stood along the baselines for a moment of silence as a matter of respect to Rev. Lowe.

P & M couldn't quite get the runs needed to mercy Sound Stage, but piled it on with six in the seventh frame as Mark Herhauf finished the game 4-5. Daniel Bordage was also 4-5 with a grand slam.

Steve Simons was 3-3 with a pair of homers for the losers while team-mates Les Dziwenka (HR), Matthew 'Pork' Hayward and Don Burgess were all 2-3.

In Friday's paper there will be a review of the B and C Division playoffs.
