While the American's stole the headlines and the podium spots at this weekend's Escape to Bermuda triathlon, it was the local athletes that dominated the amateur field.

Twins Evan and Riaan Naude and Kent Richardson made it a Bermuda 1-2-3 in the men's event.

And Kim and Dee McMullen finished first and second in the womens, with New Yorker Kerry Simmons third.

Evan Naude, Richardson and Kim McMullen were also among the athletes to qualify for the prestigious Escape from Alcatraz triathlon as winners in their age-groups.

Mark Van Zanden, Jason Correia, the only competitor in the 20-25 age group, Carolyn Conway and 18-year-old Andre Place also qualified for the Alcatraz race in their respective age groups.

In the pro race there were no surprises with favourite Andy Potts leading all the way from Dockyard to St. George's where he crossed the line three minutes ahead of his nearest rival to be greeted by his wife and baby at the finish.

Second was Brian Fleischman, with Matty Reed in third for a Colorado 1-2-3.

Becky Lavelle, also the women's pre-race favourite took first from New Yorker Rebeccah Wassner and Canada's Lauren Groves in the female pro event.
