Kyle Pimental, Marvin ‘Skinny’ Robinson and Toriano ‘The Animal’ Wilson are among the riders being honoured this weekend by the Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club.
Cyril Whitter, public relations officer, said: “There are very few people who have lived and died leaving such lastly impressions on those they met. Such is true of BMRC’s Champion, Toriano Wilson. Although a mere 14 years old at the time of his passing, Toriano opened doors for and inspired Bermudian racers young and old.”
Wilson died in 2008 after being involved in a high-speed crash at the Virginia International Raceway.
The racing prodigy was involved in a three-way crash on turn six of lap one of the Red Bull AMA U.S. Rookies Cup series race.
Whitter said: “Toriano Wilson gained international exposure at a very young age, travelling to the World Festival in Valencia, Spain. Displaying undeniable talent, Toriano’s racing career continued to flourish locally and overseas. His name became synonymous with charisma and palpable love of racing. This love led him to the 2008 Red Bull U.S. Rookies Cup, where he blazed a trail putting Bermuda in the hearts of racers worldwide.”
He added: “The path leading to the world stage, paved by our young pioneer, has now been traveled by Jevaughn Simons in 2008 and Antoine Richards in 2010.”
Some of Wilson’s accomplishments include: Competing in Spain in 2005-06; Had two top 10 finishes in Atlanta in 2007; posting the fastest lap time of the Red Bull series.
The Race of Champions gets underway at 1:30pm. Besides action packed racing there will also be free face painting, fun castle and a half time show by Gombeys. n
