The OBA's idea of change might be very different from yours
WEDNESDAY, DEC. 12: Most of us have a favourite TV show. Personally I love Law & Order Criminal intent. Detective Bobby Goren is the guy. He studies suspects’ mindsets, displaying their true character. He pushes them to the point they prick on themselves, by ranting about why the person deserved to die.
Here are some statements of OBA candidates and supporters over the last year:
Ref Bermudian workers:
“They can’t make time, they can’t dress for work as they have baggy pants hanging down and wear their hats sideways. Then when they get to work the first thing they do is get on their cellphone.”
— Michael Dunkley, RG, Nov. 25, 2011
Ref Government workers:
“It’s a big additional burden on the taxpayers,” — Bob Richards, Aug. 17, 2011. RG
‘Day of reckoning will come for the bloated public sector’ — headline on Larry Burchall column, BDA SUN, June 13, 2012
“Nobody needs unions” — Bob Stewart, BDA SUN Aug 31, 2012
“You are in favour of a union that supports wrong, that is hell bent on the loss of jobs for the workers” — C. Anthony Francis, OBA Candidate
“The present model of FutureCare will be scrapped” — C. Anthony Francis, OBA Candidate
“Race is a distraction” — Alexis Swan, OBA Candidate.
These examples reflect the mindsets of the persons in a party that claims it wishes to see change. I have no doubt that they wish to see change. Yet I am sure their definition of change and your definition of change differ greatly. From many persons’ perspectives, the only change the OBA wants is to control who is making the laws about who is making the money (change).
There is seemingly no desire for real social change. No attempts for whites to start walking towards blacks for social building. In their mantra, it is about blacks joining whatever the UBP/OBA deem is best for Bermuda.
We are all born with common sense. The secret report only confirms what we all knew. The UBP/OBA will do whatever, and use whomever to front for them. Last year UBP/OBA supporters blamed the debt on such things as; Day Care and FutureCare and the Civil Service. Now, in order to get votes, the OBA suddenly wish to increase Day Care allowance and now call FutureCare a good plan. Mitt Romney has taught them well.
Bermuda would have been more receptive to the UBP/OBA if someone like Mark Pettingill was the leader. It would negate the now obvious effort to put a black man with zero political experience and questionable self-control as the front. Mark Pettingill, somewhat of a reformist, is one of the rare white politicians who almost effortlessly can blend into any social setting. He has learned much from Minister Zane De Silva.
Let him come out publicly and say: “Yes our party is known as the white party, historically tied to many legislated acts of cruelty to blacks. Yet we are cleaning house. Even if it means losing some financial support, we have no need or desire for dirty politics.” Then blacks in this country would view it as an honest effort to address a soiled past.
Instead they put a black man up front, who has publicly taken a bullet for three people who paid for a report and executed a plan on how to fool the people of Bermuda, both black and white. Trust me, it is not a good thing. This is why most blacks will never trust a white political party ever again.
“It appears that the public face is Craig Cannonier” — Trevor Moniz RG, Jan 5, 2011
“Others seeking a platform in our country have been genuinely ignorant about the way white supremacy has imposed injustice and how it still works to maintain the status quo.” — Craig Cannonier
His on-camera rant and walk out shows he finally realizes who is running the UBP/OBA programme. In short, the OBA pricked on themselves. In the words of the great Steve McGarrett.” Book ‘em Danno!” Vote PLP.
