TUESDAY, NOV. 30: Nearly 100 students participated in the National High School Challenge with one student losing almost 30 pounds in six weeks.

The challenge saw students aged 12 to 18 exercising at the National Stadium at 5:30am and eating from a strict diet.

Today was the final event with weigh-ins and strength tests.

The 82 participants met at the stadium four times a week and kept a food journal.

Mahogany Bean, 14, lost between 25 and 30 pounds and hopes to lose more.

“I am so happy I could actually lose weight,” she said.

“I feel pretty good. I’ve lost a lot of weight. I want to lose more.

“My friend and family motivated me.”

Organiser Sarah Fellowes said: “We have had children of all sizes and shapes. The lightest was 85 pounds and the heaviest 290 pounds.”

Students were split into two groups: those who wanted to lose weight and those who wanted to build core strength.

“They had to exercise according to their need. I have seen children build confidence, strength and fitness.

“I’ve seen children build core strength and do things they never thought they could do.”

Another positive aspect of the programme was bringing students from eight different schools together.

Ms Fellows said: “I think the key thing is we don’t put school versus school. As you can see, the children are all mixed up.

“They have made friends that they wouldn’t have made.”

A winner was determined from each of the two groups and they will go on to represent Bermuda at the United Nations in March.

The winning school receives a trophy they can keep until the next competition next year.

Sponsors for the event included Capital G and BF&B.

Lawrence Fox of Capital G said in additional to sponsoring the event, the bank is encouraging students to open an Iron Kids account.

“It’s an account that’s designed for kids. Not only are we trying to establish long term relationships but also provide them with the tools.”

Mr. Fox said the bank also hoped to teach financial responsibility and independence to the students through the account.

The card can be used as a debit card in addition to an ATM card.
