The Fairmont Group has awarded a $5,000 scholarship to a Bermudian student.
Ciara Talbot, of Southampton, will receive the grant to help fund her studies at Loma Linda University School of Medicine, where she will train to be a neonatal physician.
She plans to return to Bermuda to practice once she graduates.
Ms Talbot is one of two recipients of Fairmont’s annual John Williams Post-Graduate Scholarship, an award for the children and grandchildren of Fairmont employees.
Ms Talbot’s mother, Roberta Talbot, works at the Fairmont Southampton Resort.
Nelda Simons, regional director of human resources at Fairmont Southampton, said: “We are very pleased for Ciara and for the people of Bermuda to receive this honour.
“This award demonstrates Fairmont’s care and appreciation of its colleagues worldwide and recognizes the hardworking contributions of our colleagues here at The Fairmont Southampton.”
Another scholarship of $5,000 was also given to Carly Hayashikawa, daughter of Eric and Corajean Hayashikawa, employees of The Fairmont Orchid in Hawaii.
Carly is studying at the University of Hawaii at Manoa, where she will complete her Masters of Education in teaching.
The John Williams Post-Graduate Scholarship was established in 2008.
Following a stellar 45-year career in the hotel business, John Williams retired from Fairmont Hotels and Resorts, where he was executive vice-president of operations Europe, Middle East and Africa.
To continuously encourage the further education and development of top talent, Mr. Williams and the Fairmont Foundation initiated the scholarship.
Two post-graduate scholarships of $5,000 are awarded annually.
