St George’s young guns have chance to pile on the runs
Western Stars v St George’s
Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At St John’s Field
St George’s left-arm spinner Jade Foggo has pressed home his tentative national team claims, posting some impressive stats so far this season.
In a reshaped St George’s side, high on potential and low on experience, Foggo has been central to the bowling attack.
Oronde Bascome, another young prospect on the national team radar, scored a solid 34 last week while his dad — all-rounder Herbie — holds the team together in the middle-order.
Runs have been in short supply at Wellington Oval, though, last week and George Cannonier’s side will have their work cut out against a Western Stars attack ably spearheaded by in-form captain Justin Robinson.
Stars will be missing national team players Hasan Durham and Saleem Mukuddem, so St Georges’ young bats may have a good chance to pile on some runs.
Bailey’s Bay v
Southampton Rangers
Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At Sea Breeze Oval
Arguably Bermuda’s two top teams clash at the Sea Breeze Oval in what promises to be an interesting match, in spite of the number of national team absentees on both sides.
Bay will be without Irving Romaine and Ryan Steede while Rangers will miss captain Janeiro Tucker, wicket-keeper Kwame Tucker, all-rounder Lionel Cann and spinner Dwayne Leverock.
Both sides have strength in depth with Rangers able to turn to the likes of Keith Wainwright, Curtis Jackson, Dion Stovell and Olin and Malachi Jones.
Bay have leg-spinner Tre Govia and seamer Burton Outerbridge in fine form but Rangers’ seem to have an endless pool of talent to choose from and should edge it.
First Division
Social Club v St Davids
Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At Devonshire Rec
Charlie Marshall’s impressive start to the season has got people talking about the veteran batsman as a contender for a national team recall.
The Social Club player/coach is still one of the top bats in the game and his side will look to him for inspiration against a St David’s side packed with talent.
Bolstered by the return from school of OJ Pitcher and Delyone Borden, and with only George O’Brien lost to national team duty, the eastenders are looking in pretty good shape.
Willow Cuts v Leg Trappers
Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At SCC
Willow Cuts suffered an innings defeat against St David’s last week with only four-wicket Kevin Fubler distinguishing himself in that game.
Leg Trappers have had a bit more time to get into the season and are starting to play some decent cricket.
They won a tight game against Social Club by a single wicket, but in reality it should have been easier.
Skipper Luke O’Connor hit the first century of the season in that game.
Second Division
Warwick v Devonshire Rec
Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At Southampton Rangers Oval
Warwick had their game called off last weekend and now go into this fixture without key man Daniel Morgan.
They could be in for a tough time given if Devonshire Rec can continue their good form from last weekend.
They crushed PHC thanks largely to all-rounder Dean Stephens, ably supported with the bat by Ricky Brangman jnr and with the ball by Jodi Maroni.
PHC v Police
Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At White Hill Field
Spinner Charles Symonds posted incredible figures of five for 21 for PHC in a losing cause last week.
Police, who relied heavily on the batting of Andy Cummerbatch last season, have yet to make their mark this year.
Third Division
Cleveland v Somerset Bridge
Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At Wellington Oval
We may have been a little harsh on Somerset Bridge in the past but when you lose by an innings and then some to a team who posts a meager 122 what else can you say?
Bridge were bowled out for 43 and 45 respectively last week in a new low for the club. Hopefully they can improve and give Cleveland a better game this weekend — or at least take it to the second day.
Flatts v Somerset
Saturday and Sunday at 11am
At St David’s Oval
Nelson Bascome Jnr was in fine form for Flatts with the ball last week, but he may find Somerset have a little more backbone in the batting order than their cross-town rivals.
Jacobi Robinson is in good nick and with Reid Jones among the runs, they should cope with the loss of Azeem Pitcher to national team duty.[[In-content Ad]]
