St George's mourns loss of Cup Match star
The local cricket community is mourning the death of former St George’s Cup Match bowler Jackie Durham.
The off break spinner died earlier this week after losing a battle with prostate cancer.
Durham, 78, played for St George’s in Cup Match between 1956 and 1965, claiming 14 wickets for 229 runs.
He also scored 103 runs with a high score of 37 and held four catches in the annual mid-summer classic.
In recent years the late cricketer became a big fan of a Social Club team that included son Jaymo.
Social Club coach and former St George’s skipper Charlie Marshall, said: “On behalf of the team I send my sincere condolences to the family of the late Mr Durham.
“He was a great supporter of Social Club and always gave us good advice. He loved his cricket very much and never missed our games right until he became ill.
“He loved hanging around the players and always talked about his Cup Match memories. He always had a story about Cup Match in his day.”
