The motocross racetrack at Southside will undergo a complete facelift during the off-season.
Leading US track designers Dirt Wurx will spearhead the project that is expected to be completed before the start of the 2012 season.
Last September the motocross racetrack at Southside suffered extensive damage during hurricane Igor, forcing a lengthy delay to the start of the 2011 season.
Bermuda Motocross Racing Club (BMRC) president Jonathan Trott expects the cost of redesigning and constructing the motocross racetrack to run as high as $40,000.
He said: “It’s going to be costly but again we are looking forward to sponsors helping us out.
A new racetrack is just one of BMRC’s short-term objectives that also includes sending a star-studded team of riders to November’s ‘Mini-O’s’ to be held at Gatorback Raceway in Florida.
As many as ten riders – ranging from pee wees to experts – have already been chosen to fly the island’s banner at the motocross spectacle that attracts top riders worldwide annually.
BMRC are keeping the team’s identity a closely guarded secret for the time being.
However, association president Trott did reveal that a subsidiary of his association — Rock Island Racing — is facilitating the team.
The BMRC also plan to invite top overseas riders and stunt riders to the island’s shores next season.
“It’s going to be really big, we have a lot of things happening for the upcoming season,” Trott said. “I believe this is a sign of growth and a sign of visualizing things and then making them happen.”
Meanwhile the curtains will officially fall upon the 2011 season at Southside on Sunday where even mothers will get the chance to showcase their skills.
Trott said: “It will be quite interesting to see how they compete.”
