THURSDAY, MAY 31: The local chapter of the Delta Sigma Theta sorority will be hosting voter registration drives throughout the summer.
The initiative is in collaboration with the Parliamentary Registrar.
The sorority began the drive at Harbour Nights last week and it was the first of a series that will take place through the summer.
“Your Right, Your Vote, Your Future” is the Registrar’s campaign slogan, which was chanted throughout the night.
Roxanne Christopher, president of the sorority, said: “Our main concern is to ensure that residents whom are eligible to participate in the electoral process are registered to vote.
“It is critical that our residents’ voter details are current with updated addresses and name changes.
“We reiterate that eligible individuals must exercise their right to vote, therefore, acknowledging the historical struggles that many of our ancestors faced less than fifty years ago with securing the right to vote.”
Assistant Parliamentary Registrar Tenia Woolridge added: “The Parliamentary Registrar wants to ensure that voters are registered correctly, aiding in a smooth transition when the new constituency boundaries take effect at the next general election.
“Often times, those eligible Bermudians who are not registered or registered incorrectly simply need a little motivation to get their registration particulars in order and we are excited to partner with one of Bermuda’s influential charity organizations to help spread the word.”
This week’s drive will be held on Saturday at various grocery stores throughout the island.
