Somerset fans should be treated to lots of runs
Somerset v Western Stars
On Sunday at 11am
At SCC
If last week’s run-feast is anything to go by it should be an exciting season for Somerset fans. Both the home team and Social Club went at a rate of more than seven an over on what looks like a batter’s paradise. It was ultimately a bitter defeat for Somerset but there was plenty of evidence that they are more than comfortable in the top-flight. Jacobi Robinson, with five wickets and an unbeaten 88, and Azeem Pitcher in particular stood out. Stars may be a bit ring rusty in their first game of the summer but have enough quality and experience through the side, with the likes of Albert Steede and Saleem Mukuddem, to make this a tight game.
Flatts v Social Club
On Sunday at 11am
At St David’s
Dean Minors could make his Flatts debut on Sunday and should add some experience and know-how to a side that struggled throughout last season. But the flashing blades of Social Club's big-hitters, Charlie Marshall and Winston Simmons, who smashed an electric 83 last weekend, should put their limited bowling attack to the sword. Social Club could benefit this season from having a clutch of talented players but no national team recruits.
Warwick v
Southampton Rangers
On Sunday at 11am
At Southampton Oval
Bermuda’s physio turned front-line batsman Daniel Morgan could return to the side for this clash against champions Rangers. But Warwick, still without Kian Butterfield and Lamar Caines, could be relying too heavily on the 32-year-old national team player in the early season. Stephen Bremar is a developing talent and there is a clutch of good young players at the club but the experience and class of Rangers is likely to be too much for them.
Bailey's Bay v St David's
On Sunday at 11am
At Sea Breeze Oval
Ryan Steede was apparently on electric form against Rangers last week taking three wickets in his ten overs and generating some real pace. Unfortunately the rest of the attack did not provide the necessary support to defend a sub-par total against a Rangers side, which ultimately coasted to victory with more than ten overs to spare. Bay still look a class act though and should push a youthful St David's close as Ranger's biggest challenger this year. Despite the loss of Clay Smith and Dean Minors, St David's were ably led by Arthur Pitcher junior to a comfortable victory last weekend and have enough talent to make this a lively encounter.
FIRST DIVISION
St. George’s v Leg Trappers
On Sunday at 11am
At Wellington Oval
Relegated St George’s probably feel they belong in the Premier Division.
With players like Herbie Bascome in the side it's easy to see why. But the loss of Travis and Detroy Smith, to Social Club could be a blow, though neither player turned out for their new club last week. St. George’s have made some changes of their own, bringing in a couple of new faces in the close-season and it will be interesting to see how they shape up.
Leg Trappers are a solid second tier side with a reliable bunch of players, but this is the sort of game the eastenders will have to win if they want promotion.
Devonshire Rec v Cleveland
On Sunday at 11am
At Devonshire Rec
Relegated Cleveland made mincemeat out of PHC last week with Aaron Adams coming within a run of his century. They’ll have a tougher challenge this time against a Rec side that just missed out on promotion last year.
Somerset Bridge v
Willow Cuts
On Sunday at 11am
At White Hill Field
Any hopes of Somerset Bridge faring better than they had over the previous two years were dealt a severe blow last weekend with an all to familiar thrashing at the hands of Leg Trappers. It’s hard to see them doing any better against Willow Cuts. Cuts lost Dwight Basden to SCC in the summer, but Dexter Basden remains one of the top bats in the division.[[In-content Ad]]
