FRIDAY, JUNE 24: Two-time Premier 50 Over champions Social Club have withdrawn from the league, the Bermuda Sun can reveal.
The club’s executive officially informed their players of their decision to drop out of the league four rounds into the 2011 domestic campaign at a sparsely attended emergency meeting last night.
It remains unclear if Social Club will still compete in this summer’s Central Counties.
Since returning to the top flight at the beginning of the season the Pembroke club has struggled to field a full complement of players, with a number of team members refusing to play despite expressing an interest to do so.
“I think it’s a show of disrespect on the part of the players who say they are committed but don’t show up to games or training,” commented team stalwart Kani Darrell.
“This is big blow and it’s disheartening, to tell you the truth, because I have never quit anything in my life.”
Bermuda Cricket Board president Reginald Pearman aslo expressed sadness over the club's withdrawal.
He said: "It is unfortunate to receive Young Men's Social Club's withdrawal for the 2011 season but understandable given their circumstances and we hope that they will be able to rebuild their team for the 2012 season."
Already there is speculation that Social Club’s players may be allowed to play elsewhere this season, with skipper Rodney Trott rumoured to be heading back to his roots at Bailey’s Bay.
It is also understood that St George’s are keen to have the senior national player return to Wellington Oval.
Darrell added: “We are just waiting to see what the Board’s (BCB) response will be and whether or not we can play elsewhere.”
