Smiths land heavy blows
Smith, who floored his opponent from Massachusetts State Police three times during a points win, capped off a memorable return for Bermuda Police's International Black Tie Boxing Event.
Hairdresser Joshua Smith also had a memorable night with a convincing points win over Brett Titus of Denver PD.
Smith, who has yet to lose a fight in his short amateur career, delivered one of the most accomplished performances of the evening.
His quick feet and long reach proved too much for Titus, who struggled to handle his taller opponent.
Leo Richardson's demolition of Denver cop Ron Thomas also drew the plaudits from the crowd.
It was supposed to be an exhibition bout, but Richardson won by technical knock-out after ref Billy Butterworth decided Thomas could take no more punishment.
Richardson's team-mate at Controversy Gym, Nathan Sorentino made a solid debut, opening the night with a points win over Phil Donovon from Denver PD.
Craig Morfitt, chairman of the Police Boxing Section, said it was good to have police boxing back on the calendar after a five-year absence.
He said the next major target for the Police boxers was the Teachers Fight Night in March before a possible trip to fight in Denver next summer.
He added that he hoped the Police Black Tie Event could return next year.
“The feedback that I have received so far has all been positive.
“Those in attendance seemed to have really enjoyed themselves and I am already being asked whether it will again become an annual feature.
“There are a number of issues that need to be considered before we can make a decision about holding the event next year but the Police Boxing Section is certainly considering possibilities for 2006.”[[In-content Ad]]
