Smith beat me on my worst day says Richardson

Leo ‘Lionheart’ Richardson is itching to get back in the ring and settle a score with hammering hairdresser Joshua Smith.

It’s less than two months since Smith inflicted only the second defeat of construction worker Richardson’s amateur career.

But they’ll be back, brawling it out over five rounds, at the top of the Fight Night card this weekend for the unofficial title of Bermuda’s top heavyweight.

And Richardson is doing all he can to make sure it's a different story this time.

“He’s beaten me on my worst day, now let’s see if he can beat me on my best day.”

The 34-year-old added that he had struggled to make the weight for their last bout, top of the undercard for Teresa Perozzi's world title defence at CedarBridge Academy, and had to starve himself all day before the fight.

“I know that I won’t be in that messed up condition this time. I will make the weight without having to fast on the day.

“I’m not going through that again — I’ll be under 200lbs on Saturday morning.”

“I take nothing away from Josh.

“He’s a great fighter and I’m giving him his dues, but he’ll get a much tougher fight this time.”

Richardson said he’s heard Smith was initially reluctant to take a re-match but there was no way he was letting him off the hook.

“I would have dogged him out on the street if I had to. I would have found him and made sure he gave me a re-match.

“Everyone I’ve beaten I’ve always given them an opportunity for a re-match. It’s only fair.

“If he thinks he’s got nothing to prove then he’s wrong. Of course he’s got something to prove. I’ve beaten him once, he’s beaten me once.

“We’ve got to have that tie-breaker.”

The match-up — dubbed the Fight Night Heavyweight Championship — is a five-round bout at the top of the card.

But Richardson said he would be trying to stop it before the distance.

“I don’t plan for it to go that long,” he added.

Despite his bullish analysis of the fight game, Richardson was making no predictions about who would come out on top.

“I take nothing away from my opponent. I’ll do my talking in the ring.”

Joshua Smith declined to speak to the Bermuda Sun about the up coming rematch against Leo Richardson.[[In-content Ad]]
