WEDNESDAY, MAR. 2: A Senate debate over the draft Special Development Order (SDO) for Tucker’s Point has been adjourned.
Senators were due to consider the controversial plans today but legislation took precedence, with the item adjourned until March 16.
Opposition Senator Michael Dunkley said: “Our next meeting is March 16 so I believe we will debate it then.”
The Bermuda Environmental and Sustainability Taskforce (BEST) had lobbied Senators ahead of today’s session, handing out information packs in the hope of blocking the SDO.
House of Assembly MPs approved the draft SDO on Tuesday, by 21 votes to 10, but it must also be passed by the Upper House before it goes to Planning.
If Senators reject it, the SDO goes back to the Lower House.
The operators of Tucker’s Point, Rosewood Hotels & Resorts, say expansion is needed to secure the five star resort’s financial viability.
Government says the SDO is in the national interest as the resort is important to Bermuda’s tourism product.
But environmentalists say the development will destroy protected woodland and open space.
