Roger should have won
In 1954 Roger Bannister won the first award for being the first person to break the 4 minute mile in a time of 3.59.4.
In recent years Lance Armstrong won in 2002, and Tiger Woods in 1996 and 2000.
Sports Illustrated declared Dwayne Wade as the 2006 Sportsman of the Year. Wade helped turnaround the Miami Heat from an 0-2 deficit against the Dallas Mavericks, and at the helm the Heat won the NBA Championships. I am a fan of Dwayne Wade.
He is humble and fiercely competitive (two qualities that usually don't go together). Wade is an amazing talent, but I strongly disagree with Sports Illustrated giving him this year's top award.
In my opinion in isn't even debatable who the best athlete on the planet was for 2006. Roger Federer should have won.
What more could he have done? Federer's record for the year was 92-5 (he only lost to two players, Nadal and Andy Murray), and he won three Grand Slam titles. He won the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open. He also came close to winning the French, losing to Rafael Nadal in the finals.
He earned $8.5 million in prize money (not including endorsements).
To date he has won nine slams and will be gunning for his fifth consecutive Wimbledon trophy in 2007.
Federer is up there with Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods. Even Tiger Woods (who had a good year) didn't have a year like Federer. Dwayne Wade is a good up and coming star but he is yet to transcend his sport like the great Roger Federer.[[In-content Ad]]
